About the BeesCene
BeesCene is the quarterly magazine of the British Columbia Honey Producers’ Association (BCHPA). Each issue provides valuable information, insights, and updates to our members, life members, subscribers and the broader beekeeping community across the province. The publication typically runs 56 pages and features a mix of editorial content, industry news, scientific research and updates, association business, and advertising relevant to beekeepers in British Columbia.
Position Overview
The Editor of BeesCene is responsible for overseeing the full editorial process of the quarterly magazine, from content development through to printing and distribution. This role requires strong organizational and communication skills, a keen editorial eye, and the ability to manage timelines, contributors, advertisers, and production partners. The Editor will report directly to the BCHPA Executive and collaborate closely with the Treasurer on financial matters. The Editor will have a close working relationship with the contracted graphic designer, and with the Association’s electronic communications editor (E-News, website and social media).
Key Responsibilities
Editorial & Content Management
- Solicit articles, editorial submissions, and photography from contributors.
- Manage seasonal flow of content to ensure timely production.
- Determine issue size (approx. 56 pages) and balance editorial and advertising content.
- Edit and fact-check all submissions for clarity, accuracy, and consistency.
- Work with graphic designer on layout, collation, and proofing of pages.
Advertising & Financial Management
- Act as primary contact for advertisers.
- Oversee advertising placement and invoicing.
- Manage subscription renewals and related payments.
- Provide financial reporting to the Treasurer.
Production & Distribution
- Coordinate with printer regarding production, timelines, and quality control.
- Manage distribution lists, including members, life members, subscribers, complimentary copies, and bulk orders.
- Ensure timely delivery of each issue.
Organizational & Communication Duties
- Attend monthly BCHPA Executive meetings (online).
- Liaise with editors of the BCHPA electronic newsletters, and other publications.
- Report progress, issues, and plans to the BCHPA Executive.
Qualifications
- Working knowledge and passion for beekeeping in BC.
- Strong editorial, proofreading, and fact-checking skills.
- Experience in publication management or related editorial roles.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage timelines and coordinate with multiple stakeholders.
- Basic financial management (invoicing, tracking revenues/expenses).
- Familiarity with advertising sales and client communication is an asset.
Compensation
This is a contract position with per-issue compensation, to be discussed with the BCHPA Executive.
